Donald Trump Got the Best of Megyn Kelly and Fox News

She lobbed him softballs. She didn’t have to. He won. Again.

Well, it could have been worse. Literally. Donald Trump claimed he could have called Megyn Kelly worse things on Twitter than what he did—”Bimbo.”

Last night, Kelly’s primetime special, Megyn Kelly Presents, finally aired after an impressive press tour, including multiple preview appearances on the late-night circuit. Notably, Kelly interviewed Trump for the first time since their very public falling out in August. It was…frankly…it was boring.

The theme of the interview seemed to be regret, a very retrospective take on a political campaign that is barreling toward increasing woe and darkness. Kelly asked Trump if he regretted retweeting a demeaning photo of Heidi Cruz (he “could’ve done without”) or making comments about John McCain’s military experience (he “guessed so”).

The most biting exchanges regarding journalism and bullying were already released during Kelly’s PR tour, which should tell you all you need to know.

Kelly didn’t dig into Trump’s misogynistic messaging, nor the effect it has on women. She didn’t touch policy. She didn’t even push Trump to answer if he would stop lambasting people via Twitter if he reaches the White House.

She focused on retweeting, which Trump easily sidestepped, because he doesn’t have to claim full ownership of a borrowed thought. And look, he didn’t even retweet the grossest insults directed at Kelly—”You’ve been called a lot worse,” he said. And that was the end of it.

The good news is Trump and Kelly are friends, and mutually beneficial businesspeople, again. The bad news is Trump will quickly find another target. The entirely unimportant news is Trump’s favorite book is All Quiet on the Western Front.
